Hi,

The Campbell Prediction System (CPS) alpha version 0.4.0 is available for download. This version is built on the NetBeans 6.8 rich client platform.

This alpha release includes the following features:

  • Behave Inputs are coupled to the WorldWind Terrain Viewer
  • Behave Outputs coupled to Fire Behavior Haul Chart
  • Update Center
  • Option Panels (stubs - partially completed)
  • Help Text (stubs - partially completed)

There are many outstanding TODOs, most importantly, the solar preheating component, but I didn't want to delay this release any longer. When the solar preheating work is done, it will be immediately available through the automatic updates built into this release.

The zip can be downloaded from the CPS project downloads section: http://kenai.com/projects/cps/downloads/download/cps-v0.4.0.zip.

Installation instructions:

  • I have yet to create an installation program, so to install the application, simply unzip the download to a location of your choice. The application will run from this location.

Run instructions:

  • To launch the app on the PC, you run the bin/cps.exe file.
  • For Mac and Linux boxes, run the bin/cps script.

Comments, questions and feedback are welcomed in this forum,

Hi Giuseppe,

Welcome. I'm happy to have another Mac user testing the application. Which version of OS X are you using? The CPS application requires Java 6, which is in Mac OS 10.5 Update 1 and above.

FYI: The release of CPS 0.4.1 is imminent -- and I will be working on a installation for the Mac so that you won't have to run the bin/cps script.

I would love to have your input on CPS! Please feel free to join/login to Kenai -- then you won't be an "Anonymous User" in the forum. After you login, you can "bookmark" this project for easy access to forums via the My Page link in the Kenai menu.

Also, for quick status updates, you can visit my "News" page at Emxsys.com.

Hi Bruce, first of all I wish you a happy new year from Italy (I mean, from Sardinia); thank you for answer me so rapidly.
I'm working on a Mac Os 10.4.11 (today I've updated Java but not for 10.5). I've already tested CPS windows version; it's a great tool to work on wildfire analysis directly in field with rapid solutions to commanders and guys.
I'll join today.
Best regards.
Giuseppe

Wow! The download looks great.
The hauling chart shows BTU's but it would be more useful to users if it
displayed the rate of spread in ft/min or miles/hr.

It seems like I need to launch the program from the bin folder.
Is there some way to isolate it to the desktop so I don't need
to go into the cps-1 folder?

Good show
Doug

Hi Doug,

I'm glad you got it running on your new Mac.

On the Haul Chart, the rate of spread can (in chains/hour) be determined by the vertical (y) scale. I'll add a text label to the connecting line to make it easier to determine -- as well a legend for the y scale and a "pretty" flame graphic for the plotted point. Thanks for the icons by the way.

With the next release (v0.4.1) I will work on a "setup" to make it more convenient to run. I'll also be testing it on your laptop too. But first I have to get the Fuel Flammability Chart to work. I'm working though some math issues right now - trying to make sure my implementation of the Rothermel and Byram formulas are correct.
