Often when one hears about collaboration services you get pointed to IM, mail, calendar etc. and while I can see the value collaboration solutions for developers could offer so much more. When I think about collaboration with other developers I think of my workspace and the workspace of others being shared. One of the best approaches I have seen in this area in the IDE area is available in the Eclipse world. Checkout the Xpairtise plugin for Eclipsehttp://xpairtise.sourceforge.net. Although it is designed to enable XP you can use it for simple collaboration. How does this relate to Kenai. Kenai could provide ready to go tools and extensions to enable collaboration so one click gets you going on a known service. Some other features I would like to see in Collaboration

  • Integration with emai
  • Integration with IM services
  • Integration with Calendars
  • Integrated Audio and Video
  • Integration with Bug tracking and reporting tools
  • Blogging and Forum

Recording of all the above as artifacts so there is a rich project history That is web services so during parts of the development process one can push and pull from other services. Ideally the above services would live on a wiki so that one can easily create new content. The line starts to blur when one considers building communities using Joomla, Drupal and Liferay as the project home.

Starting to sound like a powerful wiki that supports CMS. I work on large projects and I always end up building my own WIKI/CMS so that everyone can participate in the process. It would be nice if I could just buy that for a small fee. There are many Open Source projects that have bits of the solution or some that attempt to be the whole solution but none that allow you to mix and match and create your own yet provide a framework and other helpful features.

Great post Rinaldo - thanks!

We're considering much of this, though I can't confirm anything specific that we might offer in the future. I'd love to know what some other community members think about this topic...

Let's hear more ideas!

Thanks,
Jesse

How about importing contacts from my other social networks?

How about rating content, code, forums, etc.?

How about easily embedding video content?
