I would like to suggest that you consider using boox, the really-simple book-keeping api, as the back-end for this project.
Boox implements a fundamentalist double-entry approach to book-keeping and accounting by not-for-profits was one of the use-cases considered during its development.
It is still in the relatively early stages of development, but pre-beta jars are ready on Kenai now.
