Testing Markdown Forum code

Since we're on a forum code testing kick :-) let's test some Markdown code.

should be italic (single asterisks)
should be italic (single underscores)
should be bold (double asterisks)
should be bold (double underscores)

Above lines should be broken at final ")" since they have two spaces at end. This paragraph was preceded by an empty line and should be a separate paragraph.

a span of code using backticks s.b. in monospaced font (?) and the <html> tag should be visible as text. note that the font in this backticked section, while monospaced, is a bigger size than the code block text below

a + b == c 
4 preceding spaces make the line part of a code block.
third code line in block. no need for double spaces at end of line.
    let's embed some indented code
    and here's some more indented code
HTML tags like <p> aren't interpreted here

This is supposed to be indented, blockquoted text with right angle bracket.
more indented text with right angle bracket The text doesn't appear to be indented.
