The naws development environment needs to be moved to more modern tooling. The current build and test environment is too hard to use and is often rejected by new developers. The focus of the new development environment should focus on modern practices and more generally accepted development practices.

  • use of ant or Maven instead of makefiles
  • Projects for Eclipse and Netbeans
  • Junit tests

Some other members of this group are thinking that we should also offer a mercurial service for two reasons, mercurial does not litter the directories with 100s of small files, it is quite short sighted that svn does not provide a utility to remove all the subversion information and distributed development is easier, it is slightly less complicated to make clones and move repositories around.
