Standards and other Context for Open Enterprise Master Patient Index
This page is intended to describe the broader EMPI standards, user stories, and environment within which Open EMPI is intended to operate. Others are encouraged to enhance this page to make it more accurate or understandable.
The following is largely based on a National Health Information Network (NHIN) perspective, but that is the probable future for most future healthcare efforts currently.
HITSP's Service Collaboration SC 110 - Patient Identification Management Service Collaboration, is specified at http://hitsp.org/ConstructSet_Details.aspx?&PrefixAlpha=12&PrefixNumeric=110
The CONNECT spec for patient discovery is at: http://developer.connectopensource.org/download/attachments/33947653/NHIN_PatientDiscoveryProductionSpecification_v1.0.pdf
The IHE Cross Community Patient Discovery specification (XCPD) on which the NHIN specification is based provides some additional information on the use cases that were considered in coming up with the interface. This is available from: www.ihe.net/Technical_Framework/upload/IHE_ITI_TF_Supplement_XCPD_PC_2009-08-10.pdf
Additional insight into the use cases considered is at: ftp://ftp.ihe.net/IT_Infrastructure/iheitiyr7-2009-2010/Technical_Cmte/Profile_Work/XCPD/XCPD_Use_Case_Analysis.doc
The IHE PIX/PDQ interfaces define a standards-based interface for interacting with an MPI, but may be less pertinent. Volume 1 (www.ihe.net/Technical_Framework/upload/IHE_ITI_TF_6-0_Vol1_FT_2009-08-10-2.pdf) covers the profile at a high level, whereas volume 2 (www.ihe.net/Technical_Framework/upload/IHE_ITI_TF_6-0_Vol2a_FT_2009-08-10-2.pdf) describes the transactions in detail.
Implementation details for hooking an EMPI up to the CONNECT implementation of NHIN specifications are at: http://developer.connectopensource.org/display/CONNECTWIKI/Patient+Discovery and http://developer.connectopensource.org/display/CONNECTWIKI/Patient+Discovery+-+Asynchronous+Communication
Instructions for integrating one's own MPI into CONNECT is at: http://developer.connectopensource.org/download/attachments/15990843/BuildingAnAdapter_2009_06_15.pdf
