Akon!, is an audio conferencing tool, that allows sending messages to users on your LAN. You get to talk as well as send notifications.You can control, whom you talk/listen to at a particular time, with just a click. Other notification, such as when a user joins in or goes out, or just changes his / her status are also supported. And, it is written in Java, so it is almost platform independent. Exceptions are, when you are using a non-GUI based system.

It is an open source project to share files among the users of the same LAN or Subnet. It also has an chat application inbuilt with it. It is still in the development stage.
